Interview with James H. Garrett, Jr, 2023-03-17
Scope and Contents
This Carnegie Mellon University oral history features James H. Garrett, Jr., who at the time of the interview is the provost and chief academic officer of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Garrett discusses growing up in Oakdale, Pennsylvania, stopping to look at bridges on family road trips, and attending CMU in the late 1970s at a time of change and development. Much of Garrett’s discussion of the past is grounded in parallels or comparisons to the current state of CMU. Garrett discusses the influence of mentors Chris Hendrickson, Steven Fenves, and Larry Cartwright, and he walks through the responsibilities that arrived with each new job at CMU, from faculty to provost.
