Scope and Contents

The Ruth Beach papers consist of materials documenting her professional career as a clinical psychologist and academic administrator from 1956 to 1975. The collection includes correspondence, reports, studies, course materials, speeches, and unpublished writings related to psychology, counseling, academic achievement, and women in higher education. The majority of the collection reflects Beach’s work at Carnegie Mellon University, including records of the Commission on the Status and Needs of Women, affirmative action planning, the Study Skills Center, and psychology courses. Materials from Princeton University document Beach's work in the Counseling Center, with women’s programs, and affirmative action activities. Subject files include documentation on discrimination and equal opportunity, affirmative action plans at other institutions, and women’s advocacy organizations. The collection also contains Beach’s curriculum vitae, dissertation, and professional and conference materials.

Biographical / Historical

Ruth Beach (June 7, 1931 – January 13, 2015) was a clinical psychologist, administrator, and advocate for women in higher education whose career spanned teaching, counseling, and academic leadership at several institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University, Princeton University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Colgate University.

Born in Rochester, Minnesota, Beach completed her undergraduate studies at Duke University and Antioch College. She earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University, in 1964.

At Carnegie Mellon University, Beach held several leadership roles, including Assistant Professor of Psychology, Director of the Study Skills Center, and Director of the Affirmative Action Office. She served as CMU’s Affirmative Action Officer from January 1973 through December 1975 and was appointed Director of Continuing Education for Women in 1977.

Beach also chaired CMU’s Commission on the Status and Needs of Women, which was established in response to concerns about inequitable treatment of women at the university. The commission investigated these issues and submitted its final report in November 1971.

At Princeton University, Beach served as an administrative officer and clinical psychologist in the Counseling Center and taught seminars focused on women. She died in Largo, Florida, on January 13, 2015, at the age of 83.
