Biographical/Historical note
With the introduction of the National Defense Act of 1916, the modern day Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) was created in order to develop well educated and well qualified reserve officers who will be available to serve in the active army. In 1919, the ROTC program was established at Carnegie Tech and was operated by the Department of Military Science and Tactics. Upon its founding ROTC was headed by John C.W. Brooks of the United States Army until 1922. The organization originally operated four units: Engineers, Signal Corps, Field Artillery and Motor Transport. In order to better fit the University curriculum; Field Artillery and Motor Transport were eliminated from the program.
Today three branches of ROTC still exist at Carnegie Mellon. Army ROTC, Naval ROTC, established in 1926, and Air Force ROTC, established in 1981.
