Identifier: 1990-0001

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Carnegie Institute of Technology are housed in twenty-six boxes and are arranged in eleven series. Series have been designated for annual reports, College Council minutes, Deans' subject files, faculty files, accreditation surveys, research institutes and centers, programs, Conference on Materials, publications, miscellaneous, and oversized materials. These records include reports, surveys, publications, correspondence, administrative forms, and resumes. The majority of the collection is made of annual reports and the Deans' subject files. Due to the personal content included in the faculty files found in series three and four, these files are restricted. No student work is represented in the collection.

Historical Sketch

In 1970, the Carnegie Institute of Technology completed a merge with the Mellon Institute to form Carnegie Mellon University. During this reorganization, the Carnegie Institute of Technology's College of Engineering and Science was split into two separate departments. The Mellon College of Science covers mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, while all of the engineering courses and research are grouped under the Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT). CIT, also called the College of Engineering, is one of seven "colleges" that make up Carnegie Mellon University.
